Is Kotor a walkable city?
Yes! And do it to your liking. You can do a guided city tour, walk around on your own, walk the outer walls (still for free) and hike the walls of Kotor (15e pp)
How long does it take to walk around Kotor Old Town?
It shouldn’t take more than a few hours. If you are not visiting any of the landmarks (Cathedral, Museum, etc.) you should be able to explore the Old Town within 3-4 hours.
How long does it take to walk up Kotor fortress?
It takes 30-40 minutes on an average though, take more time if you need. It can be somewhat demanding to some as it take 1350 steps to reach the top. So, a good ‘photo’ break is always a good thing.
Can you tour Kotor on your own?
Yes. And even on your own, it certainly has a charm of its own. On the other hand, the best way to explore the Old Town of Kotor is with a licenced tour guide.
Can you walk the walls of Kotor?
Yes. The entrance fee is 15 euros per person and it’s charges from 8 AM until 8 PM.
How to spend one day in Kotor?
Depending on the time of your arrival, I suggest to do the following:
- Do a walking tour of Kotor
- Hike the walls of Kotor
- Have a meal at a local restaurant
- Go to Perast and visit Our Lady of the Rocks
- Visit St. Tryphon’s Cathedral
- Sit in a local cafe/pub and try local, Nikšćko, beer

Is Kotor worth a day trip?
Absolutely! Whether you are visiting for a day or staying a few nights, Kotor is definitely worth a visit! Check local guides for the best way to explore Kotor, how and which attractions to visit, restaurants to eat at, etc.
How to get around Kotor?
Super easy. Get a free local map from the tourist info kiosk (just outside the Main Gate), or hire a local tour guide for a shorter or longer walking tour.
Is the Ladder of Kotor free?
Yes. The old windy road has about 75 turns so, at least, medium level of fitness is required. Bare in mind that people often confuse the Ladder of Kotor with the Fortress Hike. The Ladder goes behind the fortress, high into the mountain.
Is Kotor Fortress worth it?
Kotor Fortress is one of the best things to do in Kotor and it is definitely worth the time and the effort!
Where to start Kotor hike?
If you plan on hiking the walls of Kotor there are two entrance points to start from. The main one is close to the North Gate – behind St. Mary’s Church, while the other one is at the Salad Square. If you fancy the longer Kotor hike, you can always do the Ladder of Kotor.
Is Kotor, Montenegro walkable?
Yes, and unlike Dubrovnik, Kotor is rather flat hence very easy to walk around.
How much time do you need in Kotor?
It really depends on your time. You can spend a day if you want to get to know the Old Town, Hike the Walls of Kotor and visit some city Landmarks. To explore the Kotor Bay area I suggest at least 3 days.
Does Kotor have a hop-on hop-off bus?
Yes. They normally operate for organized groups.
Is Kotor Old Town big?
It is the biggest Old Town in Montenegro although, not as big as Dubrovnik or some other European medieval cities
Is it expensive to visit Kotor?
If you plan on spending one full day in Kotor without shying away, you can easily spend a 100 euros. Suggestion on how to spend them:
- Hike the walls of Kotor (15 euros)
- Eat at a local restaurant (15-20 euros per meal)
- Do the walking tour (from 10e per person)
- Buy souvenir or two (5-6 euros)
- Try local beer (3-5 euros)
- Visit to a local Landmark (Museum, Cathedral, etc – appx 5 euros)
Is there a beach in Kotor?
Yes. There is a local beach in Kotor, and smaller ones stretching pretty much the length of this part of the bay
Is Uber in Kotor?
No. There is no Uber in Kotor, or Montenegro.
